Hi Warwick, yes, they are all called 'Probate' with type code 'PROB'. It's too long ago to remember, but I think this was an existing option rather than one I added. Also I have altered some others (e.g. census is split into census 1841, census 1851 etc) and they show up fine, as do other unaltered ...

Event Type Filter doesn't show probate
When I go into 'Events/Event Names' on the top tool bar you get the 'Event Type Filter' list with 'adoption', 'birth', 'census' etc. On selecting each one up comes a list of the people to whom that event applies - except when I select 'Probate'. I know there are lots of entries for that in the tree,...

gedcom export/import errors
No trouble at all importing gedcom from iFamily into FTM for Mac, customised tags on, off or whatever. All I really want FTM for is the extended family tree chart - an "all people tree" which iFamily doesn't have. Couple of nice features in it, but iFamily still well ahead in most aspects.

File date
My protection position is to include the date in the file name eg 'familyfile 07.09.2010.ftkSql'. If I'm looking and not changing no worries, if I'm going to add or change I duplicate, put the copy in an archive folder rename the new one with the new date and carry on. It is more long wi...

Same problem here - suspect something is broken as I'm sure it did work in a previous version.

Ifamily no longer loads database at startup.
Have you tried opening by double clicking on your database? When you have done that once iFamily should (in theory) open that one when you launch. Is your file showing in the File/Open Recent list?

Connecting disconnected persons
Presumably you will eventually reach the person who joins on to the tree you have. If it is someone who already exists in yours and you're heading 'down' attach them to the newly created parents using "attach existing person as a child" (under the 'people' menu, or right click on the ...

iFamily does have a field in the main pane where you can enter an "AKA", but as far as I can see those entries don't come up in the name search. This was a field that was only added shortly before Keith Wilson died and I think was intended to do more eventually. Although it is strictly correct to...

How to add parents of in-laws?
In 'preferences' make sure that 'ghost outlines' is checked on. Back in the main pane double click on your wife's name, with her as the focal person you will be able to enter data on parents carrying on back as far as you like!
Hope that helps!

Searching and filtering and date entries
The nice thing about putting an occupation in the Title or Occupation slot in the Person Pane (in addition to entering occupations as events) is that you can then have it show in your ancestor and descendant trees. There's something quite moving about seeing whole families of miners or tailors or...

re: How do I send my tree to someone in Aussie on a PC?
Another alternative would be to use the "generate html" option, but then burn the results to a cd and post it snail mail. Your cousin will then be able to explore the data on his own machine without worrying about uploading etc. If that's accompanied by pdfs of the trees as Warwick describes, the...

Delete a group of connected people
Under the "People" menu select "Prune minor dynasties and unconnected people". This will bring up lines and individuals not connected to the main tree. Select and delete - easy!
Hope that helps.

Place Listings and Editing
I believe iFamily can already do some of what you are asking. If you open the "Event Places" pull down under "Events" it lists all the places you have entered. In the the example you give, enter Knox in the search field, that brings up all the places with that combination of letters. Decide which ve...

With the relevant individual as the focal person select the family pane. There is an open arrow above the middle of the lower bit. If you click on that it opens a detailed family 'sheet' including a section called "other marriage events". Hit the plus sign and you get a choice of all sorts of marria...

add a sibling
I'm sure there's a cleverer way, but what I do in that situation is create 'phantom' parents to attach the children to e.g. Mr Smith and Mrs Smith (use whatever your surname is) which allows you to continue until you get the evidence for what they are actually called. Also works the other way for "C...

Adding second wife
Hi Yvonne, There's (at least?) two ways to add a second spouse. 1. In the context diagram make sure you have the ghost outlines option on (toggles on and off in preferences) click in it and add the new spouse. When you hit return you get to add the rest of the details. 2. In the family pane make you...

Notes - brown vs black ink
Marion,
The text turns brown when there isn't enough space for it all to show and it wraps. The colour change is to let you know there's more there than you can see. If you click on it, the cell expands and you can see all the text that's there.
Hope that helps.
Alison
