Hi Nigel, Excited about this answer. You would not believe how long I looked and looked for the little magnifying glass you mentioned. I finally saw it and it opened up a whole new world just about. (I wonder how many other places that little magnifying glass can perform magic for me... I may look b...

If you right-click in the text field the context menu has an entry for Spelling with a sub menu including an option to 'Check spelling as you type'. If you deselect this it should stop the red marking. Hi Nigel, I'm back for quick addition: Thanks for further thinking about this issue. This solutio...

Hi Kirsten, There may well be a way but mine does not seem to be turned on. There is a menu item to Open Spelling and Grammar with options for the language to be used. Mine is set to Automatic by language though you can choose English, American etc Regards, Nigel Nigel, It helped a lot when I set l...

Don't know if anyone would be interested, but I decided - after experimenting - not to use any Danish event names . I have concluded that any gain for me by renaming certain events is cancelled out and outweighed by inconsistencies I would thereby create in reports. I and other Danes will just have ...

Use of Reference Number

I see a reference number rectangle to the right in line one of a person's main window. If I type a number in this space, where does it appear? I am wondering if the only time I'll see it is on that particular view of that person or does it show up in any reports? Can I search a list of Reference Num...

How get rid of spell-check in ToDo Items

Hi,

Am enjoying getting to know iFamily and very impressed.

However, spellcheck seems active in my ToDo Items and almost everything is underlined in red. Looks very cluttered and not very clean to read.

Can I get rid of all that red underlining?

Keeping my fingers crossed...

Bevo, Thank you. I like the reassurance. But I see that I wasn't being clear - I confused the issue by mentioning my new computer. I have not actually been "using" iFamily. Just testing and getting ready and not wanting to start until I have the updated software. So, it isn't a question of worrying ...

Something I should beware of before I start?

In two days I shall install my new computer with OS Snow Leopard and after that update iFamily from its 2008 version to its current form. Then my data input will get serious. I can hardly wait. I am eager to get started on a very good foot. So, I am wondering if anyone has an "I wish I would have do...

Unforeseen consequences? Would I regret?

I am thinking about how I set up my parameters for how I want to enter data into iFamily. All my research and writing is in Danish which I handle fluently. I am thinking about the following for entering events other than birth, marriage, death: When I go to Event screen and signal add event, I chose...

Hi Nigel, This is a very thoughtful and thorough reply. Thank you. I had not noticed the "show full name in diagram" under Preferences. It solves part of the problem. I notice that in my old version of iFamily the abbreviation still happens in a descendant report. I am expecting a new computer tomor...

Thank you, Warwick for this reply. For my purposes, it is more complex than I want to learn or deal with at this point. I want to focus on iFamily itself. I had assumed it could be done within my current tools and skill levels. I was expecting to be able to attach a .png or a .jpeg sitting right on ...

Attachment to forum question

Right now I do not need to know this, but I predict that I will need it in future.

On this forum, how do you attach a picture (screen shot e.g.) to illustrate a point?

Hi Marcella, In the main diagram the ancestors are only shown for the selected person so the common ancestors (grandparents) will appear when both individuals are selected. Regards, Nigel I am curious, how do you select both individuals? (I apologize if this is a simple question.) Kirsten (new to u...

Use of Option Space in names

I am getting ready to use iFamily and am thinking about how I want to enter data. I am thinking about using "Option Space" with names to keep them together and would like to ask about any negative consequences I might not be aware of. This is my reasoning: I would enter e.g. first name of "Anne Mar...

Create one family or two?

If I create a family file to include both my mother's side and my father's side, can I later share via GEDCOM just one side ? If yes , is there a short description of how - or perhaps a link to earlier discussion of same? If no, my question would be: If I create two families - 1) my mother's side an...
