The value of a family tree is capturing the history of one's family-- not only who was related to whom, but the stories of one's elders-- how we came to live where we did, what growing up in Buffalo winters was like, how the first day of arrival to California the rain was coming down so hard they thought they'd be flooded all the way back to Buffalo, until they saw the ice cream truck driving along the rainy road, playing its tune. Then they knew they were home.

etc etc etc
(I've got a thousand of these...)

Stimulating empathy. History, personal or otherwise, is about real people with real lives, not just dates and facts.
