Handling Incomplete Place Names

Post by Rhys » Sat Mar 09, 2013 2:51 pm

I've searched through the forums, but can't seem to find the answer to this.

What is the recommended practice for entering 'incomplete' place names? Most of my family is in the state of Delaware and many pre1910 records include a 'hundred' in the place name. The hundred is a geographic area between the city and the county. So a usual place name (for me) is city, hundred, county, state. An example would be Delmar, Little Creek Hundred, Sussex County, Delaware.

Many times, an event occurs in an unincorporated area or the city is just unknown. I'm trying to find the best way to enter this in iFamily. Using the example above as a starting point and assuming 'Delmar' isn't known, my choices are:

-Leave the city blank (Little Creek Hundred, Sussex, Delaware)
-Use a comma to indicate the missing piece (, Little Creek Hundred, Sussex, Delaware)
-Use a placeholder word or symbol (UNKNOWN, Little Creek Hundred, Sussex, Delaware)

What is recommended and why? Are there other options I'm not thinking of?

Thanks,

- Rhys
