Search and Replace

Post by BillW » Fri Mar 20, 2009 10:28 pm

I&#39m using v. 2.500 and would like to have a Search and Replace command to change such things as state abbreviations to full state names. Would that be possible?

Hi Bill,

Search and replace on geographic locations is notoriously difficult, those little Two letter abbreviations turn up an inordinate amount of times in other words and indeed other abbreviations.

By Choosing Events -> Events Places from the iFamily menus, You will be presented with the list of all the event places recorded in your database, you are able to edit the place names directly on this list.

[NB: This list is the same one which is available from the spinner arrows on the personal pane. - picture here]

if you type "MI" in the filter text search box in the top of this panel, all places that include the letter sequence MI, (case insensitive), will be shown on a shortened list. Editing each occurence is then just a matter of working through that list on screen as shown, if you hold the state name in the "Cut and Paste" Buffer you can also save a few more keystrokes.

As and aside: While you are in the list of events iFamily allows you to use the google maps interface to relate a place to a true geocoded location for any number of individuals at once.

To associate an event with a google maps location invoke the context menu on each event (with a right-click or a control-click) and select Google Maps (below). The placename test will then be searced upon in a browser panel.

Initially you will see "0.0N, 0.0E" for coordinates at each of the places (above not zeroes). Click the Map button at the bottom of the panel to initiate a browser panel that will submit your location name to Google Maps for a search. After you have determined it is the correct location, or by panning and zooming until it is correct, click on the save button at the bottom of the screen and a popup dialog will verify the details with you before saving to iFamily&#39s database. (NB: The save button will be inactive until the maps page has fully loaded.)
