Changing surname to reflect adoption

Post by Jeffery » Wed Oct 26, 2011 3:55 am

What is the best way to record a person's name who was born to one surname, her mother divorced, remarried and the new husband adopted the this person under his surname? Does it make sense to simply record the child's last name as the adopted name and make a note about the event?

Hi Jeff,

I would record the name as it appeared on the birth certificate.

Changes of name through adoption, marriage etc can be inferred from the events.

You can also enter names in the 'Also Known as' field.

Others may have a different approach.

Regards,

Nigel
