Link multiple individuals to an event

Post by NTJ » Sun Oct 04, 2009 10:32 am

I&#39m new to this forum and to iFamily and would like to add one enhancement request, from an old comment in the general discussion list:

It would be extremely useful to be able to enter (and later update) some data relevant to several people in one place but yet show up for each person in his/her respective source notes (once properly connected, of course).

This would be a big timesaver for me too.

Let&#39s hope the big cheese is reading these and is already preparing the next release... :D

iFamily has a very easy and pleasant interface and looks great in my new mac. I usually open it up and use it for reference when searching online or exchanging information with other people. However, when I have to update something (usually in these events linked to multiple people), I have to fire up my old laptop (OS 9.2), update the information in the old software (Gene 4.3.4) and export the result in gedcom using an external drive...

I&#39m really looking forward to using the other cool stuff in iFamily like photos, etc. but for the moment, it&#39s no use as any minor update means throwing out the previous iFamily file.

Hi,

You can Make an event the Current event and then &#39Clone Current Event&#39 for other prople.

There is a limitation on the types of event that can be the active ones and I do not believe they update later but I find it very useful when entering Census data for a family.

Thanks, Nigel, but the problem still remains: the comment is not updated (just copied in its current version) and have hundreds of those for multiple individuals. It would be hard to keep track of the differences... I&#39m hopeful, however, and will keep waiting for the enhancement!

NTJ,

I have managed to get a mock up of sorts running for linking multiple people to a single event, so reducing the duplication of comments. Unfortunately it requires a model change to enable the multiple relationships which will not be possible without a great deal further work.

Once I start down that road I will also need to normalize the comments and notes from all the tables at the same time, so the job becomes quite large.

This remains on my list for the timebeing, I will attend to it when I return from leave in February. In the meantime I leave you all with a new release, (V2.531), as a sign of good faith.

Thanks,
Warwick.

Hi NTJ, many thanks for the reminder. (This job is up there with Myriam's need to manually enter latlong coordinates. Both ideas worthy of implementation.). Sorry for the lengthy delays.

Thanks again for the reminder NTJ :) It is great to see you are still getting good use from iFamily, despite this lacking feature upgrade. I will strive to do what I can to make it a reality come the October update. :?
