Sources

Post by Warwick Wilson » Sun Jul 26, 2009 6:19 am

Sources in iFamily can be used to reference people and/or events.

Before any source can be used in iFamily it must be added to the sources list in your database.

The Sources Menu in iFamily contains four options as shown below:

Add/Edit...
Activate a Source...
Review Source References (Citations) ...
Clone Sources from Another Database...

Each of these are examined in turn below.

Please also note any purple question marks buttons on the following dialogues, some contextual help is available where it may be needed.

Sources -> Activate a Source...
(This item can also be accessed by the [A/S] button in the toolbar.)

Any iFamily source can be set as an Active Source. To turn this on or off either pick the above menus option or use the [A/S] button in the toolbar.

This Active Source is most useful when you are entering multiple new people from a single document such as a printed/drawn family tree or a family history book that you may have handy.

If Active Source is already active then the Active Source Dialog will pop up allowing you to see the details of the currently active source and add/edit/change/deactivate it. If inactive, the Add/Edit.. panel will appear from where you can choose a source to set active.

When Active Source is turned on, any new people or events added to your database will automatically show an Add Source Reference panel connected to your Active Source where you can note further particulars about where in the source document the information was located.
Keith wrote:If your mode of operation is to work from a Source and to add all the relevant data from that Source into iFamily and then move onto the next Source and add all its relevant data, then you can have iFamily automatically create the Source References when you add new people and events.

In this mode of operation the steps are as follows:

1. Create a new Source record using menu option Sources -> Add...

2. At the bottom of the Sources dialog press the button labelled "Select as Active Source" and close the dialog.

3. Add the People and Events that are mentioned in the Source.

4. In the pop-up Active Source panel add the Page No, Topic and Notes for each Reference to the Active Source.

5. Repeat steps 3 & 4 until you have gleaned all the information from the Source document.

6. Use the toolbar button labelled "A/S" to deactivate the Active Source.

Sources -> Review Source References (Citations)...

This menu option will allow you to see which people and events have been referenced to which sources. This panel can help you identify any errors that exist in your database.

Sources -> Clone Sources from Another Database...

After selecting this option a panel will be displayed that allows you to copy sources from another iFamily database into your current one.

By default, the directory searched will be your iFamilyData directory, the available files displayed in the dropdown box will be all those ending with the iFamily *.FtkSql extension.

Once a database is selected, you can select multiple sources from the displayed list by using the shift key to designate a block or holding down the command key to select them one at a time. Once you are happy with your selection click the Copy the Selected Sources... button. You can now close this panel.

Using the Sources Pane for each individual.

By clicking on the sources tab at the bottom of the iFamily interface, you can assign Sources to the currently selected person.

Image

Each entry in this table represents a link to a source that is currently available in your database. As marked above, the buttons in the left ellipse are for adding a new reference to a source, or removing or editing the currently selected source reference.

The boxed options will allow you to display some standard details on each source in it&#39s Source Description Cell.

Using the Events Pane for each individual.

Sources can be referenced by events present in a persons record. By selecting the Events tab at the bottom of the interface you can then right click on any of the events and select Edit Event, you can also click on the [Edit] button at the bottom of the pane to edit the currently selected event.

Also available from the right click menu on an event is Add Reference to Source Number ?. If an active event is set, this option will include the source ID and Source Name of the current Active Source in stead of a question mark so you are able to associate this event with the Active Source with only a couple of clicks.

If any other people in your database also include that event, their records will be similarly updated when viewed as you are associating the event with the source rather than being specific to one person.

You can also assign sources to events by using the menu option Events -> Events with no Source Reference... to interrogate unreferenced events.
